Internal vs closed vs open testing on Google Play
12 Oct 2026 · 4 min read
Play Console has three testing tracks. They look similar but behave differently, and only one of them satisfies the closed testing requirement.
Internal testing
Up to 100 testers you add by email. Builds are available within minutes and skip most review. Great for your own team — but internal testing does not count toward the 12 testers × 14 days requirement.
Closed testing
Testers join through email lists or Google Groups. Builds are reviewed by Google. This is the track that counts for new personal accounts. You can have several closed tracks; the requirement is met by a closed test with 12+ opted-in testers for 14 continuous days.
Open testing
Anyone can join from your Play Store listing. Available only after you have production access on personal accounts created after November 2023. Use it for a public beta after launch.
Recommended path
- Internal testing for your first builds (fast, private).
- Closed testing with 15+ real testers for 14+ days (meets the requirement).
- Apply for production; keep the closed track for future betas.
